Hi there! My name is Julia Boboc.

I was born and raised in San Antonio, TX, and from there moved to Barcelona, Spain when I was 11. The next three years of living in Barcelona are what I consider to be the most formative years of my life. Apart from becoming fluent in both Spanish and Catalan, I also found a passion for understanding cross-cultural perspectives. Being surrounded by people who have grown up so differently, and learned so oppositely from me made me realize the importance of other people’s experiences and ideas. Barcelona also taught me how to be adaptable and resilient. It taught me that when you put your mind to something, you can do it. And it taught me that sometimes, people and places and lives have to be left behind, and it’s important to remember the things you learned from them.
I moved to Portland, OR, the summer before my freshman year. I was filled with excitement and terror. This is the time where I might just find out what I want to do for the rest of my life! And sure enough, my sophomore year I took my first journalism class. Something clicked, like trying your new favorite food for the first time, or meeting the person who will become your best friend. Journalism called me, and I have answered for the past four years of my life.

Journalism has been a space for me to exercise my love of writing, creativity and listening. I can highlight incredible people and stories with journalism. My mother’s story of immigration, strength and determination provided me with an inspiration. Her story made me admire her, and more, it gave me so much respect for her. It made me think, what if everyone was able to share their story to a captive audience like my younger self, would there be more respect in the world? Maybe. That’s the goal.
So, here we are. I’m a journalism major and linguistics minor at the University of Oregon. I’m a writer and a podcaster. I’m a caffeine addict and a workaholic. I’m a little too ambitious for my own good, and I get really really excited about new projects, even when they don’t work out. I still love writing, but I’ve started experimenting with audio storytelling. My mom continues to be my muse, and immigration is an issue that I love writing about.
